Macau Polytechnic University (MPU) Story: 3:00 p.m. Opening Ceremonies 3:30 p.m. MLQU vs. Chinese Taipei University 5:00 p.m. University of Manila vs. Macau Polytechnic University 6:30 p.m. Indonesia Universaity vs. Southwestern University Three of the country’s top National Inter-Collegiate teams, led by 1997-98 champion Manuel Luis Quezon University (MLQU), launch campaigns to become the first Asian University Basketball championship’s crown-holder today at the Rizal Coliseum against three foreign teams seeking the same throne. Top-seeded is the Chinese-Taipei University Sports Federation (CTUSF) five. The Visayan team of Southwestern University (SWU), however, is rated a dark horse that could upset the odds given an audience of compatriots based in the nearby neighborhoods of Malate, Singalong San Andres, and Malibay in Pasay City. Admission to the tournament, which will run up to January 31, is free. Guest of Honor and main speaker will be Philippine Sports Commission chairman Philip Ella Juico. Other speakers will be Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) chairman and former FIBA President Gonzalo “Lito” G. Puyat II who will deliver the welcome address, Dr. Ekodjatmiko Sukarso of Indonesia, secretary general of the Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF), inspiration talk, and BAP president Freddie D. Jalasco who will render the closing remarks. Other guests will include representatives of sponsoring firms Beeper 150, Fil-Estate Realty, YKL color, PLDT, Absolute distilled Water and Philip Go, president and managing director of Adidas-Philippines, the outfitter of Philippine national teams. Molten will be the official ball. A feature of the opening ceremonies will be a show to be put on by the MLQU P.E. Department dance troupe. Designated tournament director was National Women’s Basketball Team head coach Ricardo R. Roces and assisted by Reonel Parado. Official hotels of the AUBC are the newly-built Orchids Hotel on P. Ocampo Sr. St. and the Riviera on A. Mabini Street, Manila. |
